New Year Resolutions

It's that time of year, when we should write down our resolutions for the new year.
1. Run two marathons (Marion in April and Quad-Cities in September)
2. Qualify for Boston Marathon (3 hr 30 min, 8:00 MM pace)
3. Drink less soft drinks and more water
4. Swim at least twice a week

First Day of Snow

Yesterday was the last day of school for the kids. Borlaug had a Christmas celebration. The video rolled in my camera. Assen played a few songs with the Orf Club.
There was snow on the ground and it kept falling from the sky with lots of wind this morning. Decided it was better to run indoors at the UI track. Used my foot-pod to track my chronos. Ran behind an older man who seemed to go pretty fast. We ran for about four miles at an 8:25 MM pace. He stopped first and then I ran one more 200 m lap.
--Not sure if I should curse you or thank you, but I hadn't run this fast in a long time. He said to me. I told him my Garmin Foot Pod said we were running at 8:25.

Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown CT

Another crazy shooting this morning in an elementary school in Connecticut. Several children kindergarten age were killed together with their teacher! My heart is broken to know something like this happened in this country, where we live with such abundance. How can somebody dare to take away the live of a child? why? There is no excuse. There is no reason. I pray for peace. I pray for understanding. I pray for accepting each other.
How can we help this never happens again? We need to be aware of those next to us who are in trouble. We need to open our arms and let them know they are not alone.

12/12/12

I remembered mama Lupita today. Today was her birthday. She used to get up early in the mornings and play a record everytime we celebrated a birthday in our house. Las Mannanitas. She also loved to be the first person to say Happy Birthday to me in my birthday. I have excellent memories of her. I miss her. I'd love her to be alive.

I-Fly Swim Meet

Assen had a swim meet in the morning. This is the second time he competes. The place was crowded with swimmers and parents coming from different places. I am sure, he will continue to do better as he continues to practice, now two or three times a week.
50 m, free-style, 48:85
50 m, breast-stroke, 1:14:49
100 m, back-stroke, 2:21:31

Boston Marathon

The Boston marathon is the oldest annual marathon organized in the US. The first Boston marathon took place in 1897. It is run on Patriot' Day, the third Monday of April. Runners in the BM need to qualify in order to register. I need to run a marathon in 3 hr 30 min or less in order for me to qualify for BM because I am 50 years old. In order to do that, I will need to run a marathon with a 8:00 min/mile pace.
I ran my first marathon in Saint Louis in April this year and finished it in 3 hr 51 min. It looks like a long stretch to try to finish in 21 min less, but I believe I can do it with proper training. I will need to  avoid injuries, which probably won't be easy.
I am planning to run the first Marion Marathon in April 21 next year.  It will take me 20 weeks to get ready and I am starting officially the training program this Tuesday. I will be running 3-8 miles six days a week and doing a long distance run on Sundays, 10 to 26 miles.
Why am I doing it?  Because I want to be remembered as an athetic person. Runners are special people. Marathon runners are more special, and Boston Qualifiers (BQ) are an elite group. I hope to be an example for my son and daughter. I'd be proud to know if I am remembered by them saying I ran a Boston marathon when I was 50 years old.

Garmin 405 Course Feature

We went to Hickory Hills park last night to try out the Course feature on my Garmin Forerunner 405. This is a beautiful park situated within Iowa City near Regina School. This park is like a forest with lots of hills. There are hiking trails where you can get easily lost.
Transfering the course to the Garmin was not straight forward. Transfering the course from the computer to the Garmin was only possible using Google-Chrome; using Internet Explorer was not an option. Also, I wasn't able to put more than one course in the Garmin.
We drove to Regina High School and turned the Garmin on after parking the car. Walked to the beginning of the course, and the Garmin was able to show me which direction I needed to run. There were a couple of useful screens on the Garmin that showed me which way I needed to go. This is a very cool feature of the Garmin watch that not many people use.

Legend of the Fall

Happy Thanksgiving Day! Headed to Regina High School to register for The Legend of the Fall early in the morning. This trail race is organized to honor late Coach Bob Brown who died of pancreatic cancer. The race starts at Regina track and goes through Hickory Hill park. I talked to Ross K and Kellie T before the race. Kellie had both of her legs full of scratches because of running the course yesterday. That looked scary to me. Weather was perfect for running.
I stood next to Kellie and Robin on the track at the beginning of the race trying to figure out a strategy. Race started at 8:00 AM. Took the left side of the track to pass a few slower runners. The trail went downhill and then flat. I was breathing very heavily. Saw some good runners in front of me and knew I was going too fast, so I tried to run more conservative. There were several hills --going up was extremely challenging and going down was a bit scary, since speed can get really fast. I got so tired at mile 2.64 that I had to walk up a hill. I was amazed by this 9-yr old kid running by me (Bryson Canton). Although most of the race I was ahead of him, he passed me and I wasn't able to catch him up at the end.
I also saw Kellie T when the long and the short courses met. But although I tried to catch up to her, she finished too fast for me. Finished in less than 30 min --more like 29:16.  I was happy with my chronos (7:19 MM pace). This was probably the last race of the year.

Glucose Levels

My blood tests are ready. Unfortunately, glucose was higher than last time (105 and 100). Is my diet that bad?  Definitely it was a bad idea to visit McDonalds right after my blood test, glad I didn't visit him before the test. I am sure everybody I know will testify that I exercise enough. So, it has to be my diet.  When there are cookies around, I know I am the only one who takes doubles.  I shouldn't do that.  I should cut the cookie in half instead! I need to change some bad habits. I am 50 yearss old and my metabolism isn't what it used to be thirty years ago.

CRWC

Thought about going swimming thinking some students were gone for Thanksgiving break. I was able to find an empty lane in the large pool. Did my 10 laps using my lap-counter. I still get pretty tired after each length, so I take a small break in between lengths. Half of the swimmers looked like Chinese students.
My calf is still tight from yesterday's long run. I had trouble walking yesterday because of my calf. It felt better today, but it is still kind of tight. I'd like to go for about four miles tomorrow. I should be OK.

Synergy Gym

Took Sophia to her gymnastics class this morning. This place is run by a couple of Russian gymnasts that were olympic athletes and University of Iowa coaches. The place in North Liberty was full of beautiful young girls of different ages. They also hire some staff to help run the place. Sophia enjoyes her class very much. She is petite but strong and flexible. Can't wait to see her doing more advanced exercises. Of course, they must take years to learn. Sophia trains on Saturdays only. Probably, she can do more during the summer. Maybe she can combine swimming and gymnastics.
Dmitri Trouch said hi to me (see 7:24 min). He is the father of Assen's classmate at Borloug and one of the owners of Synergy Gym. I have seen some videos of his performances and he is just incredible.
I also took Assen swimming at the Field House last night. There were about six children in his sophomore class. They had two instructors. I did not count how many laps they swam, but for sure, they did more than what I can do. Assen also swims only once a week. Assen is not the best swimmer in the group, but he has been slowly improving. He is good at backstroke, but he stops and turns around everyother stroke... There was a young girl swimming like a fish. She looked older in the water. But she looked like eleven or twelve when she was outside the water.

Echinaceae

coneflower
We are writing a book chapter on natural and synthetic alkamides: application in pain therapy. Interestingly, one of the most interesting fat-soluble alkamides is found in Echinaceae, and it is abundant in my backyard. This plant is known as coneflower. It is common in central and north america.

Chile

Flew to DFW from CID, then Santiago and Concepcion. The flight from DFW to Santiago was about 9.5 hrs. Sitting down in an airplane seat for that long is a real accomplishment. Spent a few hours in Santiago airport andadjusted my watch to Santiago's time. I saw books of Roberto Ampuero and Alberto Fuguet in the airport libraries.
Met my old friends Carlos and David Seigler. Drove to Talca where we had a wonderful meeting at the Universidad de Talca. Made some new friendships and learned a few things. They had a couple of cultural events and a great banquet where the young people danced like crazy. Visited their Jardin Botanico and took many pictures of their plants.

Lab Results

These lab results are not from my own research lab.  They are results from my annual blood test. These are the things where I did not do well:
Creatinine, 1.4 (too high). This is a sign of kidney malfunctioning.
Calculated GFR, 54 (too low)
Glucose, 100 (1 mg/dL too high!)
Anion GAP, 7 (low)
What can I do? Things are starting to missfunction! I guess, I need to watch my diet more closely and make a few changes. Any suggestions are welcome!

Milagros Socorro

I have been enjoying getting to know the Venezuelan writer Milagros Socorro for the last few weeks. I have learned a few things from her. We are fortunate to have this International Writers Program here at the University of Iowa. We have a unique opportunity to get to know international writers, particularly some from Latinamerica! I am eager to read more books now.

Flomax

Picked up my first prescription of Flomax. I was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). I don't think the doctor needed an MD to figure it out when I told her I usually get up about five times to the bathroom at night. It scares me to know for how long I will have to take this medicine. I hate the idea of taking a medicine for long periods of times. I read this is a life-long treatment...  sucks!

Pace and running solo or with a group

I am the first one to be surprised of my fast pace during 5K races! Where do I get the speed from? Is it pure adrenaline? Is it motivation to break a PR? I definitely like to follow good runners and see if I can keep my pace with them. Definitely, it must be a mental thing.

Last year, I ran 5K races with a pace of about 7:20 MM. I dreamed about running 5K with a 7:00 MM pace. I said, I'd be glad if I could run that fast. Surprisingly, I was I able to accomplish this dream this year!

Here's a list of all the 5K races I ran this year:
Amana Freezer, January 28, 21:31, 6:55 MM
Doc Dash, March 24, 21:25, 6:53 MM
Get Moving for Healthy Kids, August 26, 22:16, 7:10 MM
Run for the Schools, October 14, 21:38: 6:58 MM

The interesting thing is that I can never run as fast when I run solo. If I run easy, my pace would be about 10 MM. When I push myself and purposedly try to run fast, I can get to about 8:00 MM, but not better than that. I can only run 8:30 MM when I push it.

I like to see how runners my age do in the same races I run. They amaze me and leave me open mouthed! How can they be so fast?  what's the secret? Are they better fit than me? How long have they been running? What's their body weight?

I enjoyed my training this Fall.  I was running about four miles each day. I did intervals on Wednesdays, and long distance on Sundays.  I believe in this program.  I will continue this program and hope to keep getting better next year!

Run for the Schools

Rained all day Saturday. More rain was pronosticated for Sunday too. We prayed and begged Tlaloc for no rain. Surprisingly, the rain stopped a few minutes before the race started. We could not believed Tlaloc heard our prayers. However, organizers cancelled the 10K and half marathon races. We had no choice but to run the 5K. I could not believe they were cancelling the half-marathon.  I always thought runners are tough athletes and they never quit.
Stayed on the side line with Dan. Then, we heard the big sound for the race to start at 9:00 AM. There were some walkers in front of us, but we passed them very fast. Recognized a few runners, but they were just running for kicks and pacing some friends of them. Ran a few meters with them and then decided to follow faster runners. The first mile seemed long. The second one was even longer, and by the third mile I was thankful I was only running 5K! Finished in 21:38 according to my Garmin. No one drop of rain during the 5K.

Hump Day

Ran on Tuesday and Wednesday, slow and concentrating on running form. Tapering time and getting ready for Run for the Schools Half-Marathon on Sunday. I am looking forward to running this race. It should be fun running with so many people in my city. It will be my second year running this race. I plan to run with Dan B. Unfortunately, my friend Salvador M won't be running this race.
I read yesterday was the last day for registering to vote.  Am I registered?  Is it necessary to register to vote?  This is so confusing. I hope I can remember to stop by the public library and see if I can vote there.

Bank of America Marathon

I ran nine miles with Jennifer this morning. We ran the South Route from Running Wild. Had some very good conversations. There were almost no runners this morning. Phil Young ran the Bank of America marathon in Chicago with a record time of 2:30:38!  Pretty amazing time! that's a 5:44 MM pace. Tsegaye Kebede from Ethiopia broke the Chicago record in 2 hr 3 min.

Swim Competition

Assen did his first swim competition. He tried three different 25 yd races.  He did very well in his backstroke. He apparently came in second place. He tried very hard and I felt very proud of him. We saw some of his friends competing too. Weather is changing. Getting colder and colder and leaves are accumulating on the ground.

Yasso 800s

Ran for one mile as warm up --ran with Dan and Mel. Ran the first mile at 8:30 pace. It was a great warm up. Then, we stretched and stretched all the muscles. Got ready for some serious workout!
Decided to try the Yasso 800s. Ran with Dan and Emily and two other gals. First 400, ran behind the group. Then, catch the first runner and ran next to Emily. Last 100 mts speeded up to get first to the finish line. Ran each 800 between 3:06 and 3:20 min. This time is supposed to be an indicator of my time for a marathon race. I still need to build the endurance. We did six 800s. We are supposed to add one more 800 each week, until we can do 10 800s. I liked it. I felt pretty good.  No tiredness after the half marathon last Sunday!
Today, I went to see my young friend Luis Rangel run a 5K at the Ashton Cross Country. He did awesome and finished in around 18 min! He was about number seven in more than a hundred runners! I hope he continues running! He's got some talent there!

Quad Cities Half Marathon

Had a few dreams in my sleep. Got up at 4:30 AM and got ready for the race. Drove to Gene's house and he drove jhis new Toyota to Davenport. We missed the exit I-74 at Davenport but arrived just fine. It was a cold morning, but I decided to wear shorts for the race.
I found my pacer, Mary 1:40. Started running next to her for the first few miles. Then, going downhill, I separated from the pacer and joined a different pacer, a marathon pacer for the 3:15!  Ran with this guy for a few more miles until marathon runners separated from half-marathoners. There were many pretty girls a few meters from me. That made the run a lot more fun. There was a gorgeous tall girl running at a very good pace. I didn't see her again after the marathoners splitted in mile eight, but I am sure she ran only half. I saw her at the finish line, she came to me and congratulated me for the good run. It looks like she was not wearing a bib number!
I thought I slowed my pace a little bit. Miles seemed longer and longer. I felt cramps coming on my calves, so I did not push it harder. Finished ahead of my pacer: 1 hr 38 min 22 sec. I have been wondering why the pain on my calves.  They say I probably did not hydrate properly. I think I will carry two bottles of gator in my next long distance race.
Race was extremely well organized. Had plenty of food. I ate a very nice bbq pork-sandwich! I even got a free massage by a chiropractor. Dan finished the marathon in 3 hr 33 min! Ross finished it in 2 hr 51 min!  Amazing!

East Route

Ran this morning with the RunningWild group. I went for 12 miles. Ran with a young girl named Lis, and also met Julia, a dailymile friend. Ran slow, but still ended up pretty tired. Then, took the kids swimming to the CRWC. The Quad Cities half marathon will be in six more days.  I am planing what pace to run in the race. There will be pacers for 1 hr 45 min (8:00 MM) and also for 1 hr 35 min (7:14 MM).  But, I ran my previous half in 1 hr 41 min. What a dilemma!

Colombia

I spent a week in Palmira, Colombia. Met some very interesting people and learned about Colombians a lot. I enjoyed seeing them dance. Although they have lived troublesome times, they are happy people. I learned about the TLC "Tratado de Libre Comercio," recently signed with the United States. They do not think is a fair treat. It benefits the US a lot more than Colombia.

5 Milers

I ran five miles yesterday morning and other 5 miles this morning. This should be my normal runs during the week. They are long, but they actually take less than one hr, which is just perfect.
I am getting ready for the trip to Colombia. Packing clothes, deciding what to pack...

UI Track

Attended the workout at the UI track last night. Decided to run 400 m laps and 3:30 min rests. Again, I ran pretty fast about 8 intervals. Of course, it helps to be running next to excellent athletes like Curtis. The RunningWild crew had gatorade for us, and it was deliciously cold.
I swam about 8 laps in the Wellness Center in the morning. I concentrated in my kick.  I cannpt understand why I am so slow when I kick only.  I see these other swimmers working on their kick and they are f-a-s-t!

Get Moving for Healthy Kids

Second 5K race of the week this morning under the rain. Course was more tough than yesterday's. I was still happy with my time. I couldn't believe I was leading the race by Farewell. I wanted somebody to pass me!  They did at the Mormon Trek Hill. I came in ninth place overall and second in my age group. The race was very well organized. I was surprised this time, they had chips for timing and they also gave lots of medals!
Found some very interesting videos of Leo Manzano. He is such a talented runner. He is fast!

Rascal Run

Ran a 5K this morning that benefits the Good Shepherd Center (Day Care) in Iowa City. This race was organized by Jen F.  It was attended by about 100 runners. I came in third place overall. A young guy came in first place, his name was James. He told me he just movedinto the area. He is a new grad student in physics. These are the paces for each mile: 6:30, 6:50 and 7:12.

Viernes

Went to the CRWC and got there at six am. Had to share a lane for swimming, but it worked out alright.  I swam 14 laps.  The girl swimming in my lane did more than that!  Swimming class starts on Monday.
I am reading Paula by Isabel Allende, and I am enjoying it. I like the way she tells stories.  Sweet! That will be the nextbook to discuss in our next Spanish Book Club reunion.
I am looking forward to a 5K race tomorrow morning. Rascal Run. It will be a very flat course. An excellent opportunity to get a new PR.

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Jueves

I went to the UI track last night. Phil and John led the running group. I ran 800 mts intervals with jogging breaks.  It was tougher than previously.  I hope these workouts help me this weekend.  Let's see if I can break my previous 5K PR. Hopefully, weather might help. Saturday's race is flat!

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Martes

Got up and warmed up doing some stretching. Then, went outside and ran the first mile with Karen.  She was doing almost 12 MM, so I decided to go solo and faster. I talked to my neighbor this morning. One of her daughters is the same age than Sophia. Maybe they can get together and play.
Today will be a busy day.  Teaching my first graduate class of the semester, and then chairing the Latino Council meeting at noon. We are reading Paula from Isabel Allende for the Spanish Book Club.

Running Wild South Route

Planning to run 10-12 miles, but ended up running almost 16. Ran with Ryan, Jen, and Josh. The south route is flat an easy, and it's very nice because it goes along the Iowa River. There were more than twenty runners this morning. Some of them are probably training for the Chicago marathon.
Went to the CRWC and found that they only let you swim in one half (not both). I started swimming and sharing a lane with a guy. But pretty soon, he left. The lengths seem to be shorter than the C'ville Rec Center (maybe they are the same length). I used a floatie in between my legs to help me float. It seems like swimming with the floatie was easier. I swam 12 laps. Most of them free style, but a few back stroke.

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Saturday Morning Run

Ran easy with Karen. I talked to her into doing the extra mile to finish with five miles. She said we should run a Healthy Kids 5K race as a family. We saw a couple of workers fixing the pavement on the trail. The grass on the Ashton X-country field has been recently mowed. It looks very nice. Fall is track and field season.

Friday, August 17, 2012

CRWC

Again, swimming at the olympic pool. Tried to swim the whole length doing front crawl, probably two laps.  The rest of them, I did half front crawl, and then when I start drowning, I truned around and do back stroke.  When will I be able to swim a few laps without getting so tired?  I finished a lap, and I felt excaltly like when I run 400 mts intervals!  almost dead! My new swimming class starts on Monday.  I hope it helps me improve my swimming endurance.
I discovered Lori Bradley's blog. She is such a good writer, and she is so deep in her thoughts. I am getting to know her better through her blog!

First Day of School

A lot of kids got together at the corner of the street waiting for the school bus. The kids looked happy to get together again and parents were there with their cameras. It rained quite a lot this morning, but it stopped raining by the time we were standing there.
Received an e-mail from Sophia's teacher.  That was nice of her sending e-mails to the parents.

Speed Workout

Ran with the RunningWild group at the UI track.  Did 8 X 400 mts with 3 min rest. Ran with Nathalie and Orlando.  They are two young great runners. Ben and his wife were there too.  There were mor than twenty people!  Kudos for RunningWild!

Monday, August 13, 2012

CRWC Olympic Pool

I thought the diving well would be open this morning. Had to swim in th eolympic pool. I started front crawl, but after 25 m, I change to back stroke, which is easier for me. I am still very intimidated by the length of the olympic pool. I signed up for the intermediate swimming class which starts on Monday 27th. My goal is to better my forms, so I can swim the olympic pool without getting so tired.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

RunningWild East Route

Got up early enough to make it to RunningWild. Saw Ryan and Kelly and went running with them. Kelly is running the Chicago Marathon and Ryan the Twin Cities Marathon.  I decided to go for twelve miles. Met Wendy and ran back with her.
Three africans (Uganda, Kenya, and Kenya) got medals in Men's Marathon in London. Meb got a respectful fourth place and Ryan Hall DNF.

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Saturday

Got up and went out for a run with Karen. I convinced her to do the five-mile bicycle trail loop. Nice cool morning.

Scott Bradley passes away

Karen's cousin, Scott (around 40 years old) passed away this morning after he went out to play basketball. He came home and said he could not breath. They called an ambulance, but they were not able to help him. I suppose he had some heart issue. I feel very sad for his wife Lori and his seven year old daughter Jaelyn. I will try my kids to stay in touch with Jaelyn and Lori as much as possible.

Thursday, August 9, 2012

UI Track

I went swimming in the morning of yesterday. I swam 14 laps at the C'ville Rec Center. I joined the RunningWild group for interval training. I ran 7 X 800 mts and 3 min rest. This time I used my Garmin to record the training.  I was very happy with my times.  I also felt ith good energy because this time, I did not run in the morning.

Monday, August 6, 2012

CRWC Competition Pool

I knew the diving well would be closed and the competition pool open this morning.  I tried to swim there, and I was able to swim only four laps.  I get too tired doing my front crawl. So, I combine it with back stroke.  I felt very tired from all the training this weekend.  I enjoyed going to the hot tub and then the sauna.

Sunday, August 5, 2012

RunningWild

Ran with Gene, Bill and Jennifer for almost nine and a half miles this morning. Had a big breakfast at Hy-Vee after. I felt very sleepy after I got home.
American marathoners did not do very well this morning. The podium was for Tiki Gelana (Ethiopia), Prisca Jeptoo (Kenya) and Tatyana Petrova (Rusia). The winner had a chronos of 2:23. Amazing runners. The course looked very tough and it was also raining.

Saturday, August 4, 2012

Woodpecker Nature Trail

Ran on the Woodpecker Nature Trails with Ross, Ross, and Kelly. We met at 7 AM. These guys seemed to know every inch of the trails. They were kind enough to slow down for Kelly and me. Running uphills was tough for me. We saw another small group of runners training. I was sweating and my t-shirt was soaked! I had to walk the final hill with the steps. I had fun. I am sure my running will improve if I keep training hard with RW on Wednesdaysand Sundays. I plan to run the Quad-Cities half-marathonn September 23. I hope to PR!

Friday, August 3, 2012

CRWC Diving Well

Swam 550 yds.  I am spending less time between lengths. Trying to do more front crawl. Saw Greg F. swimming.  He says he swims about three times a week. Not sure where I will swim next week.
USA has more olympic medals than China (number two).  Track competions start today in London. Go USA!!!
Got a new pair of Saucony-Kinvara3's!  yeah!

Thursday, August 2, 2012

Wednesday Track Training

I started the day by going to the Trojan Field track. Did about ten intervals 0.1 miles with 1 min rest.
In the evening I rode my bike to the UI track. I wanted to see the RunningWild group training. John was very nice and invited me to join them. We started by doing some stretching and then the group was divided in three groups. I joined group B.  We did several 800's. They like to time each lap. Three minute rest in between laps. Next time, I should program my Garmin for 400's and three minute rests.  I goofed around with the Garmin and it did not record my training.

Monday, July 30, 2012

CRWC

Swam eleven laps in the diving well.  I feel like I am needing less resting time between lengths.  Talked to Duncan this morning.  He suggested I should try to go for 50 mts at a time now.

Bix7

Got up at five am and got ready for meeting Gene W at his house. We drove to Charlie F's house and met also with Bill. Charlie drove us to Davenport. These guys have known each other for many years and they are very good friends. We got ready and headed towards the corral where we waited. Race started at eight. Temperature was not hot. Perfect for a 7 mile race!
Just like last time, we had to dodge people walking or running very slow for the first couple of miles. I had to dodge people the whole race. I was chasing Charlie for two miles, but then decided to run solo. I ran the first mile in 9:18, but ran the rest under 8:00. Finished time was: 55:35.  That was better than last year (56:07). That's motivating.
Saw several Iowa City runners and said hello. We celebrated finishing the race having breakfast at the Machine Shed.

Borlaug Elementary School

Ran for four miles this morning. Got some rain last night, but it seems like it is not enough. Temp for Bix7 is expected to be about 85F. That is hot! I shouldn't expect a PR this race.
Visited BES.  It's so impressive!  what a nice building and what a nice school! I wish all the best for teachers and students at the new school.  This is the place where students can find millions of opportunities to develop their talents. I hope something incredible comes out of this place!

Interval Training

Decided to run at the Trojan Field track. I did 3 X 1 mile intervals with 2 min rest. My interval pace was close to 7:30 MM. My foot cooperated very well. I will taper for the next two days. Will need to figure out how to pick up my packet in Davenport.
Saw a video of James Holmes, the Colorado murderer, in court. He doesn't appear to be himself. There are some strange things that happen and we have no explanation. We should learn to identify when somebody is having a crisis, so we can help them before anything bad happens.

Cross Training

Went straight to C'ville Rec Center and swam eleven laps. Then, spent a few minutes in the hot tub. I am definitely spoiled. I am resting less and less between laps, but I still need lots of improvement. I can swim 25 yards, but 50 is a way different story.  I will work on my distance next time I go to the pool.
Registration to the Bix7 is done. The plan is to run with a pace of 8 MM or better. Hopefully I can PR the Bix7! Now, I need to see when I can pick up the packet.  It will be available Thursday and Friday.

RunningWild Run

I ran six miles with Gene W. He is such an inspiration to me. I hope I can be as fit as he is when I am his age. How slow am I going to get in ten years? I decided to run Bix7 next week. I'd like to run this race just to compare my time with last year's (7:30). I'll be happy if I can run with an 8:00 pace this time.
Went swimming to North Liberty in the afternoon. They only have one line for lap swimming. There was always somebody doing laps, but they were all nice people who didn't mind sharing the lane.
News are talking about the masacre in Colorado (James Holmes). How can somebody do such a horrible thing? I cannot comprehend.

10K Race

I went out running with Karen, planing to run for four miles, easy pace. In mile one, I saw a group of people running. They were doing a 5K/10K and decided to join them. Ran with the 10K. The race finished by Walgreens, so I had to run a couple more miles back home for a total of eight miles! That was not my original plan, but I thought it would be a good workout in preparation for Bix7, right?

Daniela is born

My first niece was born this morning. Welcome to this world Daniela!
I went to the CRWC in the morning and found that pools were closed. So, I drove to C'ville Rec Center and swam 11 laps there. I need less rest between laps.  That makes me feel happy because I know there's been some progress. I swim front crawl one way and back stroke on my way back.

Running

Second day in a row running. I ran on the Saucony-Kinvara this morning (four miles). I think my foot is stronger now. I believe I could run Bix7 without injury.
I joined the WeRun group in the evening. I ran almost six miles with a young guy, Ben. Brian and Kris are very nice people. They are organizing a 5K race for September 1st.
I am continuing writing Cartas A Mis Hijos. I started letter 2, which is about Assen's adoption. I talked to my mother and my aunt.  I asked how my grandma died and my aunt said it was a xxx.

Laps in the Diving Well

I was kind of scared to go to the CRWC this morning. I was afraid I was too tired of swimming and I was not going to be able to swim 50 mts at a time in the olympic pool. Decided to go out of bed and give it a try. I was very glad to see that swimmers were using the diving well for lap swimming and also that it was almost empty! I swam ten laps, most of them front crawl.

CRWC

We visited the CRWC (Campus Rec & Wellness Center) yesterday. Assen tried the I-fliers for a second time. He swam in the deep part first and then in the olympic pool.  I was very impressed with his form and his endurance!  What a great opportunity to be able to train in such state of the art facility! We got a family membership, so we can enjoy the facility.
We visited the facility a second time in the afternoon, before going for dinner, and I was able to do eight laps. Most of them in back stroke. Going front crawl to whole 50 mts is tough. The CRWC has a steam and a sauna room!

X-Training

Swam about ten laps or more this morning.  I usually swim front crawl first length and back stroke the length back. This time, I did not take very long breaks in between lengths. Happy with my progress.
I started writing Cartas a Mis Hijos last night.  I wrote in  Spanish.  I will write in English next time. It's fun! I hope they get to read them some time.
Sophia completed her swimming class today. She passed PS-II and she will be taking PS-III starting next week.
I received my Sportcount in the mail.  With this little gadget, it will be easier to count laps when I go swimming.  Can't wait to go back to the pool!  Maybe I should try it tomorrow morning, if I can.

Jueves Run

Ran with Karen this morning to Ashton. I ran faster than her in Ashton. Ran a total of five miles this morning. Foot does not hurt, but it feels funny. I want to run the Bix7, but not sure if it is a smart idea.  Let;s see how my foot feels in th next couple of weeks.

Miercoles Run

Listened to SteveRunner while I ran. Steve read a poem, Yesterday by M. S. Merwin.  It was pretty good.  Time went faster because of listening to the podcast, but I had to fix my earphones every ten yards.

Martes Run

Ran with Karen this morning to Ashton. Did a lap and returned home (4 miles). Ran very slow and did not notice any high HR peak (avg HR 127, highest HR 151). Tried to run on the ball of my foot most of the time. It was tiring but it seems like the best way to stay away from injuries.
Assen and Sophia went to their swimming class at Cville RC. Assen viisted the I-Fliers in the evening with Sebastian. He swam a test and was placed with the Sophomore group.  We'll tak to the coach and see when he can join.
Had dinner with Sophia at Noodles and Co. She war running around and ran into another girl, probably about the same age. They both went to the ground.  I asked Sophia to apologize, but she refused. It seems like she does not know we need to apologize when we do something wrong. Later in the evening, the kids were playing outside in the trampolin.  I called then and told them it was time to come inside the house.  Assen came, but Sophia called me an idiot. Assen asked her to apologize, but she refused. Karen talked to her, and requested she apologize to me.  We spent at least one hour and there were many tears in her eyes.  I talked to Assen, and asked him why Sophia is acting that way.  I asked him if I was doing something wrong. He said maybe Sophia is afraid of me.  I yold him there is no reason they have to be afrai of me.  I told him I love them both with all my heart.

Lunes

Went swimming in the morning and did 10 laps (10X50 mts). I found this bandaid in the water, and I used it to count my laps. There were old ladies swimming in the pool.  How can they swim?  They seem to float and move very slowly.  It's amazing to see them swimming.  Of course, there is thisother lady Mrs Pharm, who swims laps restlessly!  I know she is being swimming for years.  How much time do I still need to train to be able to swim like that, I wonder?
Assen and Sophia started their swimming class today.  Assen is taking Level Six, and Sophia is taking Level 2 pre-school, I think.

RunningWild Group Run

Rode my bike to RW and parked it there. Met with Gene and his two friends and went running with them until the first water stop.  That was about 1.8 miles. I noticed my HRM indicated up to 205 bpm while getting there.  That was strange! Decided to run back to RW as planned.  I am still very concerned about my stress fracture and don't want to hurt my metatarsals.  Saw Ben and talked to him for a couple of minutes. Then, his wife arrived too.
Ran on my trail gloves.  I think they are safe.  Although they are minimalist shoes, I really like them.  I did not wear socks, so my feet had more room in them. I think my metatarsals did not complain.
I would like to train for the Bix7. Not planning to PR, just to run it without injuries.  Would that be possible? It's only seven miles... That means I should be running about 4-5 miles next Sunday. I will swim Mondays and Fridays and run the other days.  Sounds like a good plan.

Saturday

Decided to go for a run at the Trojan Track.  I did eight laps for a total of 2 miles.  Interestingly, my heart rate went very high (up to 195 bpm).  That was strange.  I wet the HRM before I left home and I also rode my bike to the track. That was weird. No pain in my foot, but it feels funny.  I am debating about getting a new pair of shoes.  Running on minimailst shoes on grass is perfectly OK.  Also, I never had any trouble running on the Trail Gloves.  I even ran the marathon wearing the trail gloves!
My toes still feel "funny." It's not pain.  But the toes feel like they are about to break off from the rest of the foot!  That's why I feel scared of running on pavement again. I don't want to go back to the doctor to tell me I need to completely stop running if I really want to get better.
I am thinking about joining the RunningWild group tomorrow morning, and just run 1.5 miles with them (for a total of three miles).  I am thinking that maybe, if I run three miles only, maybe my foot will be alright. The big question is which shoes should I wear?  The Nike's are more traditional, but they are old and tight.  The trail gloves feel good on my feet, but they are minimalist...  But I ran with them in the marathon, right?

4th of July

Could not attend the parade this morning because I had things to do at work. Rode my bike to Ashton X Country and ran about 2.3 miles, then rode my bike back home. It's been hot and humid. I read Diane Nukuri-Johnson won the 8K Fifth Season race this morning. I saw her running yesterday on Melrose Ave. She will be running the marathon at the Olympics in London representing her birth country, Burundi.
We watched the fireworks in Coralville. They were spectacular, as always. Salvador and his family had us for dinner, together with several other families. We walked to watch the fireworks from his house. We kinda lost Sophia on our way back.  She started walking with Salvaador's wife Laura, but we didn't know it.  I knew she was safe.

Monday

Went swimming this morning at 7 AM and found the pool almost empty.  Swam for at least 500 yds.  Tried to combine front crawl with back stroke. The pool will be closed in the mornings for the next three days, so I plan to go running in the mornings. Esay, very easy, to let my legs remember how to run.

Mexico

Mexico has been a focus of interest for all hispanics in the US today. Polls indicated that EPN was leading the presidential race, but internet appears that the real leader is AMLO.  How peaceful the presidential transition will be?
Ran for the first time in a while.  Ran about two miles in the Ashton Cross Country field.

Elections

Mexico will be electing president this Sunday. Polls indicate Pena Nieto is leading the presidential race. The people wonder the veracity of the numbers. Not sure how much it matters. I have no hope in any of the three presidential candidates (Enrique Pena Nieto, Manuel Lopez Obrador and Josefina Vazquez Mota). Will violance continue in the country? poberty? insecurity?
Mexico has changed since the time I left. I believe it has improved somewhat. But I still think, that if it was today, I would still decide to leave the country to come here to find opportunities for a better life.

Lancaster, PA

Several families got together for a few days in Lancaster, PA. Families that adopted a child from China in 2008 spent a few days together in Amish country. A couple of children are now about 10 years old, Jen Fen and Jack. The other children are about six years old, like Sophia. We all enjoyed the country, the food, the swimming pool, but most important, time together.
We visited Hershy's Chocolate World. They have a very nice 3D movie and some rides, and of course, lots of chocolate.

Father's Day

Went biking for 10 miles in the morning.  Swam for about 30 min.  I feel like I am swimming better. It's been three weeks since I started swimming. I hope I can swim better in a couple of months! Dia del padre.  Recordando a esos que viven dentro de mi.

Leyendo a Jorge Ramos

Bilingual Education

I went for a bicycle ride (about 7.8 miles) and then went swimming! I think I am progressing with the swimming.  I hope to be able to do a few laps at a time.  Broke my goggles, and had to get a new pair.
I have dreamed about having a bilingual eductaion in Iowa City schools. How can we get this to happen?  I thought about writing a letter to Mrs Shoppa, the Borlough School principal.

Martes

Rode my bicycle in the morning to Coralville Rec Center.  It took me about 15 min to get there. I am looking forward to my swimming class this evening.

Monday

Haven't run for one week. My foot felt better this morning, but it felt rare during the weekend. I know that if I go out running, it will start hurting again.  Let;s see if how it feels in one more week.
Went swimming to the City Park pool yesterday with the family. Tried to do a few laps, and they went ok. Not sure if I should go swimming this evening or tomorrow morning...
There was a Mexican presidential debate last night.  I watched a couple of videos in YouTube this morning. Not sure about the quality of all three candidates.

Jueves

Went out on my bicylcle. Now, I started feeling some pain in my right knee and I slo feel this tingling on my right foot, which I believe it's related to the metatarsal stress fracture. This is frustrating! Am I ever going to get better? I have swimming lesson tonight. I look forward to improving my technique.

National Running Day

Joined Andy swimming at the Rec Center this morning. Oh, how priviledged I feel having this facilty available for swimming! I am not sure how many laps I did this morning, but I felt a lot more confident. I am enjoying it more and more. My goal is to be able to swim a few laps at a time.

Bicicleta

Felt very tired this morning.  I have prohibited myself from running this month.  My foot was diagnosed with metatarsal stress fracture and the only way it will get better is with resting. I decided not to run during June, and start really slow in July.  Hopefully, I can do Bix7 by the end of July.
Bicylced for 7.5 miles this morning.
My first swimming class went very well. We started with some basic movements. Nothing too hard. I am looking forward to my next class.

Rest Day

Stayed in bed. I need to give lots of rest to my foot. I plan to bike tomorrow, maybe a short ride. My first swimming class will be tomorrow at six in the evening. Can't wait!
Read a story to Sophia this morning. The House with the seven color rooms. She liked t. She wanted me to keep reading more stories.

Sunday Running Wild

Got up this morning and drove to RunningWild.  Decided to go the whole loop (bad idea). My foot started hurting [really bad] after seven miles, and it just got worse. Need to stop running and rest!  I will see how I can do this.
Watched La Otra Familia in youtube.  I really enjoyed it. It presented things in a very real manner. Made me think about how people see things that are probably not real.

Ashton X and Sutliff

Ran this morning with Ben. We met at the Ashton X country course and did two laps. No pain and a nice pace! I hope to continue doing this great.
Rode my motorcycle with a few other guys from church (and four other bikes). Had lunch at Sutliff and chatted for a while (Marlin and Marsha). Nice beautiful country roads.  Hot, but fun.

Lap Swimming

Decided to give it a try to lap swimming. It is the toughest thing I have ever done!  Did about five laps and gave up.  Too hard.  Decided I need some learning, so I signed up for an adult intermediate swimming. It will be twice a week, starting Tuesday June 4. I think it will be great cross training. It will help me develop my upperbody.

Sports Medicine

Went to see the sports medicine doctor.  They made me run on a treadmill. But no pain!  I know, it only appears when I run on pavement!  They suspect a few things, and they are thinking about an MRI.  They asked me to come back on Friday, bring my shorts and tennis shoes and they'll make me run on pavement. They want to know exactly where the pain is.  They said no more running for one month (June 23?  I will be in PA).

The Flu

I feel terrible this morning. My whole body aches and I feel feverish. I am coughing a lot, and it hurts. I hope it goes away, but I know I should get some medicine.
I will see a doctor at the Sports Medicine Clinic on Wednesday to see what is wrong with my foot. I hope they can help me with some exercises and don't tell me I cannot run.

Sunday, May 20, 2012

South Route

Felt good in the morning. Started running at 9 min/mile, then I speeded up a little bit more.  Things were going just fine, no pain. Until mile 4...  Returned on Mile 5.  Had to walk/run on grass as much as I could to avoid the pain. Talked to Joe at RunningWild and he advised me on talking to a sports medicine doctor.  I will make my appointment as soon as I can.  He also gave me some information on minimalist shoes and injuries. from the Division of Sports Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston.

Synergy Gymnastics

I ran with Karen in Ashton Cross Country course this morning. Then, I took Sophia to her gymnastics class in North Liberty.  There were these young girls standing on her hands, and walking and turning around just with their hands. Amazing how strong they are! Sophia did a wonderful job as always.

Ashton Cross Country and same-sex couples

Thursday morning run, 4.4 miles, 10:20 pace. Felt tired and worried about the feeling on my left foot. Foot still weak. Nice running on the grass. Didn't see animals or runners today. Had all the field for myself.
Talked to Assen this morning about same-sex couples. I tried to explain to him that church does not allow this type of relationship. I explained to him that several decades ago, women were not allowed to vote. People sometimes make wrong choices, but they can correct them later. We believe same-sex couples have the right to live a normal live and should not be treated differently. It's time to correct this.

Ashton Cross Country

Ran from home to Ashton CC, around, and back, that was 4.4 miles.  Tried to run on turf as much as I could.  My legs get tired, but I think they will eventually get stronger. I will bike tomorrow and give some rest to my feet. Saw an oposum with about five little ones on her back!  what a moment!  Never seen anything like this before!  I also saw a deer crossing the course.

Monday, May 14, 2012

X-Training

Decided to give some break to my feet and went on the bicycle this morning. Used the cadence pod... it seems like to Garmin stopped when satellite reception was not good and relied on the cadence pod...  Not sure what works best.
Talked to Assen about school, what happens when you finish Elementary, and Jr-High, and High School.  Talked to him a little bit about college.
In the afternoon, walked about 1.2 miles with Karen and Sophia. Sophia used her scooter.

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Ashton Cross Country

No pain when running on Ashton Cross Country with my Merrell Trail Gloves this morning! So, it is the banging of my foot against the hard pavement that make my metatarsals hurt! I will try to run on the Cross Country field as much as possible, so my feet get stronger.  I should wear more padding when running on pavement.
Running on grass is hard, but that's OK with me.  I know this hard training will pay off during road races. I am a happy dude today!
Mother's Day in the US. Happy Mother's Day!

Bicicleta

Decided to get up and go out for a bicycle ride this morning. Trying to give some rest to my foot. Received a message from Runblogger and suggested I should go see a physician about my possible stress fracture.
Everyweek, I log in a list of words in SpellingCity for Assen. He likes to practice vocabulary matching.  I think it is a great idea to develop his vocabulary (and mine).

Metatarsal Stress Fracture?

I went out running this morning and felt a terrible pain in my left foot, by the joint where my big toe attaches to the rest of the foot! I thought about stop running and go back home. I continued running  on grass as much as possible and slowed down my pace. It was a lot better to run on grass than on the cemented trail. I think I should give my feet some rest from running (or switch shoes). Time to get that bicycle out!
Here are some interesting readings on metatarsal stress fracture:

Ronald McDonald House 10 Miler

Second time I run this 10 Miler. I had the chance to talk to Ryan and Ben before the race. I was telling them how hard it is for me to run at a fast pace during my training, but when I am racing, I get some energy from somewhere and I can push hard. It looked like the beginning of the race was a bit different from last year. Then, I felt it was all familiar. Running uphill on the trail was necessarily with good form. I could feel my forefront of the feet hitting the pavement going uphills. My Garmin was letting me know I was going at a good pace. I ran in with a pack for most miles. The pack was dissolved by mile six or seven. Tried to finish strong at the end. I didn't let any runner pass me at the end. I finished in 1 hr and abou 17 min. Pretty much the same time than last year. I am so amazed oh my body's memory to run at the same pace than last year.

Saturday, May 5, 2012

Cinco de Mayo

Ran about 4.5 miles this morning practicing negative split. I started running at 9:37, and finished at 8:02. I felt like I put lots of energy. However, the average pace was only a 9:07. Is this normal?  How can I attempt to run 10 miles at less than 7:40 tomorrow?  Is the adrenaline going to do all the extra work?
Not sure if I should just take it easy and run with Gene and Bill. I am more tempted to set my Garmin to 7:45 pace and run a real race. The question is if my body is ready for it.

River Run 5K

We ran a 5K as a family. Sophia jogged most of the course.  I begged her to get on my shoulders, but she begged me to put her down because she wanted to RUN! Assen and Sophia did a great job and I am very proud of them.  We have a PR (45 min) to break for next year! Saw Robin, Salinas, Ross K and Ben F.

Dam to Downtown Iowa City 10K

Went to check out the race in the morning and took some pics and video.  I saw Tom Ries and Phil Young leading the race. These guys looked tiredless running effortless! It was freezing! I wonder if that helped Tom run faster (?).
Sophia can spell letters when she reads words and she can also write them down!  She amazes me! This girl is going to go very far! She was the only student at Gymnastics today (go figure). She also asks me to read words in Spanish to her. She wants to learn!

Coach Jack Daniels

I watched a video in youtube where Dr Jack Daniels talks about four important things that a champion has: ability, motivation, opportunity, and direction. I was very impressed with his thoughts. Do I have an ability for running?  I guess so.  Maybe my ability will not let me be the best, but I am certainly not too bad!  Motivation?  definitely I do. Opportunity?  Yes! direction? yes, there's plenty of direction on the internet!  I am a champion!

Obama visits the University of Iowa

Obama came to visit us for a second time.  He talked about student loans and how he knows how difficult it is for a student to get into this kind of debt.
Ran four and a half miles this morning, even though I felt kind of sleepy and tired.

Sunday, April 22, 2012

Nueva Ruta

RunningWild had a new running route for us. It is 10 miles, and it goes north to iHop and then goes by Camp Cardinal Blvd, turns left on Melrose and goes down all the way to the river. Then, it goes by City Park and back to the store. It looks like a great route. I ran a few miles with Ben. Andy and Jackie showed up just before we were getting out. I ran about six miles with a pace around 8:20. Felt pretty good, but not good enough to do a race next week.  I should probably take a break from races.

Sistema de Voluntariado

One of the several things I admire of my fellow Americans is their voluntarism. A quality I have acquired and valued everyday. We can volunteer our hands to do some work and our mind to contribute with ideas. I enjoyed riding my bicycle on the beautiful bike trail (Clear Creek trail).

Recovery Run

Got out this morning and ran slow for four miles. Running in flat surface was not a problem, but I could feel sore muscles running uphill. Can't wait to see the pictures of the race posted.
Finished watching the movie (Cansada de besar sapos). It was a funny movie, and it was interesting to see a new generation movie. I enjoyed it. I liked Ana Serradilla, she is very cute.

Go! St Louis Marathon

Arrived to the marathon (Go! St Louis Marathon) just in time (I shouldn't let this happen again).  I was not able to get into my corral.  But, it was not a big problem.  I found my pacer (3:45) and then I passed him (bad idea?).  Then, he caught up with me.  Followed him for several miles.  Then, I realized this pace was way above my capabilities, so I had to slow down.  Focused on keeping a good pace and finishing.  The last three miles seemed endless (my pace went down to about 10 min/mile).  It was a very tough course.  Long hills. The last mile, I was in total pain.  I started feeling cramps in my calves.  I slowed down just enough to avoid the cramps --pain!.  Finished!  3 hrs 50 min 54 sec (chip time). I was happy with my chronos.  I totaly agree when people say the real race starts at mile 20. Those last 6 miles were very tough.
There were 1600 marathoners. I came in 270th place (19th in my age group). The winner was Julius Kosgei and finished in 2:28:38 (pace: 5:40).  Incredible!
There were 8738 half-marathoners.
The race was very well organized.  Lots of water stops and gatorade. Sponges with cold water felt great on my neck. Some miles seemed longer (the ones with no spectators). Ran with a few people with a similar pace. It was fun!
What an amazing experience!  Can't  believe I was able to overcome such pain. Spectators had a lot of funny signs!  It would be nice to make an album with all of those funny signs!
Now, I understand when people say a marathon will change your life.  You will never be the same person again. So much truth! I gained a very deep respect for all marathoners.  They are very special people. I am glad and proud to be one of them!
Visited Jason and Sonya in their house. Met their beautiful blond daughter Catalina. She is six and goes to kindergarten. Had a great supper with them and enjoyed some good wine.

Day before the St Louis Marathon

Ran for four miles at a marathon pace.  Trying to get a feel for the marathon pace.  Garmin is set. My body is ready.  Four hour drive to St Louis. Reservations are ready.  Luggage is ready. Plan: run at a 8:35 MM pace. Stick with it. Follow the pacer.

Latino Book Club

I enjoyed lunch with a few Latino friends yesterday. We discussed some issues about our Mexican culture and Latino issues. A video that shocked me was when they interview the Mexican presidential candidate and ask him about whoich books are the ones that have caused an impact in his life.  The poor man was not able to answer the simple question.  We thought about organizaing a reading club within our Latino community!  We could read one book a month and get together to discuss it.  I really liked the idea.

Easter Sunday

Ran my last long run before the marathon (12 miles).  Should I follow the 3:45 pacer?  Should I be more conservative and follow the 4:00 pacer?  That wil be the question of the week. I am daring, so I plan to follow the 3:45 pacer and bear the pain!  Think navy seal!
Ran the first four miles with Karen.  Sophia wanted to join us, so she came along riding her bicycle.  Wow!  at four years of age she can keep up with us!  She will be a great athlete some day.

Sabado Alegre

Ran four miles easy. Getting ready for tomorrow's 12 miles, last long rung of the program.
The kids hunted easter eggs last night at the neighbors yard. They ran and had so much fun. Assen had a large bag full of eggs.  They had candy inside.

Jueves 5 Millas

Had a pretty good night sleep. Karen made a little noise when she was getting up when getting ready to go outside and woke me up. Felt tired and the thought about sleeping in passed my head. Got up immediately and got ready to go outside. Started running easy and went down on Melrose Ave. Ran into another runner and exchanged the "good morning!" The wind reminded me of Mexico City's.
Checked my training program and saw I have 12 miles to run on Sunday.  I should follow the program as close as I can.  I have no commitments for Sunday morning, so I should plan on it.

Miercoles en Iowa City

It was hard to get out of bed.  Thought about skipping one more day of running. Ran about four miles with Karen. Pace was slow (10:40). I hope I can go to sleep early tonight, so I can recover from the trip. Recived my RunnersWorld magazine and bought a Mexican version in the airport.

Lunes

Feeling pretty good after the race.  I wonder if the naproxen I took helped me feel better.

10 M Tune Up Coyoacan

Got up really early and went to Viveros de Coyoacan. There were plenty of taxis in the streets. The cab didn't take much time in getting me to the race, not much traffic on a Sunday morning.  It was a magnificent race (Tune Up Coyoacan 10 M, search for #335). Excellent organization. The race started at 7:30 for the 5M and at 7:45 AM for the 10M. There were all kinds of vendors (I bought a couple of running shirts). Felt tired after Mile 1, I know, I started probably too fast).  I ran each mile slower until mile 5.  Then, I tried to speed up a little bit. There was plenty of water and gatorade. Fruits and doughnuts at the end of the race. Everyone received a medal.

The winners in the 10M race:
1466; Guillermo Ramos-Espinoza, 56:30
1852; Ernesto Becerril-Bustamante, 56:36
2219; Mauricio de Leon-Martinez, 57:32

Great race in the beautyful streets of Coyoacan. Great atmosphere and perfect weather. The best part was running surrounded by many great Mexican runners.

Mexico City

My latino identity. I enjoyed chattng with students and other faculty last night at the ALMA panel. It was interesting to hear about the strugles some students confront while striving to survive in college. I enjoyed learning about the Ana Merino's passion on what she does.

Tuesday 4 M

Start to feel better.  Ran only four miles.  My body is slowly recovering.
Made plans to meet the Olivo Family this Friday in Mexico City. Excited to see some family members after so many years.

Week # 18

I had pain at night, particularly on my knees and my hip.  However, I feel my body is slowly recovering.  I hope I can get up tomorrow and go for a short run.
Results from the Doc Dash 5K are supposed to be up, but I cannot display the page in my computer.  Something appears to be wrong.  Can somebody fix it?

Domingo South Route

I ran docdash 2012 5K yesterday. There were 728 runners (not all my age, of course). I started pretty good, but by mile 2, I noticed I didn't double tie laces in my shoes and my right shoe's lace was untied.  I thought it would be a bad idea to stop and fix the problem.  I have run with untied shoes in my practice runs.  Third mile was tough going uphill on Grand Ave (la avenida del demonio!).  Ross S shouted at me, go Horacio, the finish line is just around the corner.  So I speeded up and gave it all. I was glad with the results.  Ross took a couple of pictures of me and others.
Today I met Andy in my house and we ran together to RunningWild, then joined the group and ran with Ben and Dave. We went all the way to the end and around the lake (South Route).  I was felling pretty tired after that and slowed down.  Drank all my water an the two gu's I took with me (smart idea). Decided to complete my training at RW. Met some other interesting runners there. Ben was vry kind and gave me a ride home. No more long runs!  This was it!  I experienced pains I hadn't experienced before. I guess it's all part of the training.

Viernes

Rest day. Getting ready for tomorrow's 5K.  Not sure how fast to run...  probably as fast as I can, right?
The LNACC hosted Jesus Chuy Negrete singing Mexican-American Corridos.  It was a lot of fun and a great cultural event. Wished more students showed up for these great events. I listened to El Barzon, a folklore song that I really enjoy.

Miercoles 4 Millas

Feel tired.  I am thinking twice before I get out of bed. I am nervous thinking I need to run 26 miles on Sunday.  Feel I cannot do it.  Need tu run slower.

Monday, March 19, 2012

Week # 17

Starting week #17 of the training program. Went for a short bike ride in the afternoon.  Assen was sick and I stayed with him most of the day. Registered for Doc Dash.  Race starts at 9:00 AM on Saturday. Hopefully, I should have enough time to finish the race, go home and take Assen to his first swuimming class of the Spring.

North Route

Came back from Riviera Maya yesterday. Ran with the RunningWild group this morning. My feet were feeling horrible at mile four. Returned at mile five. Had to walk parts of the route. Feet felt very swollen.  I hope I can recover fast.
Watched the LA marathon on the computer. Simon Njoroge (M4, Kenya) and Fatuma Sado (F11, Ethiopia) got the first places (2:12:11 and 2:25). Temperature was about 80 F in LA this morning.  Kelly T finished in 3:56:51 (pace 9:02). Great job!

Friday 5 + Miles

Instead of taking the day off went for five plus miles. We will be driving to Rockford this evening and flying to Mexico tomorrow (day off). I'll see if I do my long run Sunday or Monday and take the next day off.

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Thursday Eight Miler

Temp 31 F and cold wind. Two more days to fly to Mexico. Thinking about running tomorrow since we'll be traveling to Mexico on Saturday.
Signed up for a 10 M race in Mexico City. It's the Tune Up Coyoacan Chevrolet on Sunday, April 1st.  Wonder what it is like to run at 7,400 ft over sea level. That race will be two weeks before the marathon, so it's perfect timing!

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Tuesday Seven Miler

Started week 15 with seven miles. Ran to RW via Mormon Trek and back. Temperature was warm.  Hard to believe the temperature went up to 70 F! There's also more light in the early hours.

Monday, March 5, 2012

Week 15 -- Monday Rest Day

Start of week 15. Rest Day. Temp outside 6 to 8 F, pretty cold. Glad I stayed home.
We watched a movie called Fat Boy Chronicles. It was really good. A High-School freshman is teased because of his obesity. He suffers, but starts to do something about it.  He starts running and watches his diet. He makes some really good friends.  They can see how good he is. They do not see just a fat boy, but the person he really is.

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Sunday RW South Route

Drove to RW and ran with a group this morning. Met a lady, Kim, who does triathlons.  I was very impressed to hear about her training (running, swimming, and biking). Also met Andy, another triathloner. Ran five miles (second water stop) and made my way back to RW.

Friday Rest Day

Stayed in bed this morning.  Hopefully this will help recover from my cold.  I have been sneezing and my nose running.  My eyes are a little bit watery. Surprisingly, white flakes are falling down today! Everything looks white again and roads are slushy!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Thursday Double Four Miler

Completed my eight miles this morning.  Listened to a podcast while running.  Felt very tired. I hope tomorrow's rest day helps me recover. My throat was hurting badly yesterday. My nose seems to be running faster than my legs today.
I almost completed my lecture on anticonvulstants this morning.  Had to go pretty fast because I only have a few lectures left.  I will lecture on morphine anlagesics on morning.  That should go easy.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Tuesday 6 Miler

Could have taken another rest day. Ran on Melrose Avenue. Pain on my right knee is back since Sunday. It does not hurt when I run, that's a good thing.

Sunday, February 26, 2012

Sunday Long 24 Miler!

Ran to RW in the morning and met with the group. Ryan, Joel and Kelly stayed with me for the long run (went around the Trueblood Rec Area). It's soooo nice to run with a group of runners.  Miles are shorter and time flies!  The group kept a great pace (about 9:10 MM). Did some additional miles and got my 24 under the belt!  Time to rest!

Saturday, February 25, 2012

Saturday 4 Miler

Went for a slow run this morning. Getting lots of rest and getting prepared for tomorrow's long run.
We enjoyed attending a Chinese Concert this afternoon.  Chinese students from East Normal Najing University did a great performance.

Friday, February 24, 2012

Friday Rest Day

Did not get up this morning to run.  Recovery Day!  I was looking at Hotels in St Louis for the marathon week. Need to make arrangements soon.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Thursday 7 Miler

I was planing to do eight miles, but time was against me this morning.  I also felt pretty tired, so decided to cut it into seven miles. I felt like I was running slow, but actually my pace was about 9:30 MM which is not that slow for me. I will definitely appreciate a rest day tomorrow.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Wednesday 6 Miler

Had to go to the airport this morning to drop my friend Wei Wang, who came from New Mexico to give a superb seminar. I went back home and rapidly changed my clothes and went out for a nice and slow run.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Tuesday 4 Miler

My legs did not feel like they wanted to do intervlas today.  I also could not figure out how to change the lap recorder in the garmin, so I decided to just run.  Somehow, I ran each mile faster (negative splits). That was a great feeling! I figured out who runmex is in garmin-connect.

Monday, February 20, 2012

Week 13?

Skipping week 12. This should be the beginning of week 13 of the marathon training program, since I plan to do St Louis in April 15. Rest Day today. My right knee hurt all night. I am slowly recovering from yesterday's 22 miles.  I hope I can do the 6 X 800 tomorrow morning. Took some ibuprofen.
My friend Wei wang is visiting from New Mexico. We enjoyed dinner at Thi Spice last night. He will be giving a seminar tomorrow.

Sunday 22 Miler

Got up earlier than other Sundays and went running to RW.  Took the short route because there was enough light and I wanted to get there on time. Ran the South Route (16 Miler) with Ben and two other young guys.  Then Joel Wells joined the group and Ben turned around on mile 5. Went all the way to Napoleon Park and then headed back. Felt pretty good the whole time, except when I had to go home solo!  Those last two-three miles were the toughest ones.  Nicely, I had an average pace of sub 9 MM. Felt pretty good about the run!
We took the children to pick up garbage by the pond near FareWay. We filled three large bags with trash!  We left the place clean.  I felt really good about it.  I hope our children learn no to trash any place, but to pick up garbage and keep this country beautiful.

Saturday Short Run

I started reading the book, Cita en el Azul Profundo (2004), by Roberto Ampuero. It seems to be an interesting detective novel.  I think I will enjoy reading it. I found the book in our IC public library.
Ran four miles after breakfast. Getting ready psycologically for tomorrow. Plan to run to RW for about 3 miles, run 16 miles (South Route?), and 3 miles back home.  That should add to 22 miles.
Hiked a couple of miles this afternoon with the family in Frytown. It's beautiful this time of year. A rabbit scared the heck out of me.  Not used to wild animals yet.

Friday Rest Day

Well deserved rest day. Looking into reading some local Spanish writers.  The University of Iowa is well known for their International Writing Programs. I am interested in reading some of these authors.

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Thu Double Four

Ran to Walgreens and back (four miles), then ran to Weber and back (four more miles). Got my eight miles done!  Tomorrow, a well derserved rest day.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Wednesday 6 Miler

Decided to put six miles under my belt. Ran to Finkbine until hitting the 3 Mile mark, then made a 180 degree turn. Temp was as nice as yesterday and there was even more light!  It's getting nicer in the mornings.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Valentine's Day

Felt well recovered from Sunday's long run.  Got up earlier than usual and got those seven miles under my belt! I overdressed for this morning's 32F warm temperature. There was a layer of snow in some parts of the trails, but not enough to slow me down.
Ricardo Abad, a Spanish runner, is running 500 marathons in 500 consecutive days!  Wow!  That's very impressive.  I believe he runs each marathon in about four hours each. But he has a marathon PR of 2:46:11.

Week 10/11

Feel a lot better this morning, with lots of rest. This week will be 10/11. I am thinking about skipping week 10, so I can catch up with the training program, since St Louis M will be on April 15.
Watched the Grammy's last night. Adele got several Grammy's and album of the year (21). It was a great show. They paid homage to Whitney Houston who just died at 48 years old.

LSD Sunday

Well, I showed up at RunningWild this morning...  and nobody else was there!  cancelled!  I drove home fast enough to catch up with Karen and run my first four miles with her. I did arrive on time just when she was ready to go out. We came back with more than four miles in the Garmin.  I thought I could go for seven more miles and then return (4+7+7=18). I went to the Water Park, and then about one mile more north on Debuque Rd. Had a gu on my way back and decided not to pay attention to the milage anymore, but only my hear rate. Got home and shut off the garmin.  17.5 miles, not 18!  Not sure what happened.
I felt very tired all day long.  Drank lots of water.

Saturday Easy Run

Temperature is cold (10F), but the cold wind on the face was worse! Easy run for today.
I listened to a very interesting podcast called Running the Golden Years. Dan, a sixty year young man, who talks about his exercise training routines. I was very impressed with the chronos he has!  It seems like he does a lot of swimming too. Definitely, that is the way to live retirement! Dan is a true inspiration!
I saw a YouTube video of German Silva running in Spokane in 1990 (Lilac Bloomsday 1990). Man! He is fast and strong!  I like his running form better than anybody else! What an inspiration.  I would like to get his book Corre!

Friday, February 10, 2012

It's Friday!

Rest day. Tomorrow only a short run in the schedule, getting ready for the long run on Sunday. Temperature is still going down.

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Frozen Whiskers

Temp keeps going down. This time the thermometer read 14-16 F. Got the seven miles done in pretty good time (8:33 min/mile). Wetting the HR monitor helps to have a better reading. Now, it doesn't show that my HR goes up so fast.  I guess they were all false readings.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Slow Run

Took it very easy this morning and ran for four miles. Since this Sunday I will be running 18 miles, I thought I'd better follow the program and take it very easy today. I will run seven miles tomorrow, but Friday is off. Temperature is cooling down again.
Why do people resist to exercise? If they know exercise is good for them, if they know exercise is needed to live a healthy life, then, why they still opt for not exercising? They know, but do they believe? What is the difference between knowing and believing? They know because they have facts, documents that show evidence, convincing proves that support the knowledge. Knowing is not enough. When you believe, you do not need any prove, any data, you just believe and you act on what you believe.

Long Hill Workout

I warmed up for about one mile, and then ran up and down a hill by the Hawkeye Rugby Field. The distance was marked from 0 to 1/4 mile (0.25 mile X 44 ft). I did it a few times (about 7X).  I hope my legs get stronger with these workouts!
The hill at Shanon Dr is about the same elevation (48 ft), but shorter distance (0.15 mile). Not sure which one gives me a harder workout.  Probably the same.

Monday, February 6, 2012

Week Nine?

I am starting week nine of the training program.  Not sure what to call it because I am doing St Louis marathon and not the Urbana marathon. Rest Day. There seems to be more light in the mornings. Temp was still in the upper twenties.

Sunday, February 5, 2012

LSD Sunday Run

Since we decided to go to St Louis for April 15. I will need to modify my marathon training schedule. Instead of running 7 miles, I decided to go for a little bit more (11 miles). It was slippery in parts of the trails, but I was careful enough to run on the grass when the road was icy. I saw more construction at the end of the trail.  I bet the Clear Creek Trail will get a little bit longer this year.
In the afternoon, we went hiking with the kids and our neighbor kids. We did the Cedar Valley Nature Trail by Suggar bottom. Walking on the road on our way back is always tough, those hills!

Saturday, February 4, 2012

Saturday 5 Miles

Easy first four miles. Last miles ran solo a little bit faster. Road a little bit icy slippery. DailyMile says I have more than 100 miles on my Kinvaras and 100 miles on the Merrell. Sophia has gymnastics this morning.
Found out there is a spring marathon in Olathe, KS. The Garmin Marathon will take place on Saturday, April 21 at 7 AM.  That sounds like a great option!  I wonder if Olathe is closer than Urbana. I need to check that. The course looks scary, finishing a few miles going uphill!  I am not sure how bad going up 200 ft is.  I could check with some experienced runners.
Karen wants to go to St Louis.  She thinks it should be more fun (Go! St. Louis Marathon). We could leave IC sometime after noon. It should take us about four and a half hour to drive to St. Louis.

Friday, February 3, 2012

Fri Rest Day

Can't believe it's Friday already.  I think my body had enough energy to go for a few miles this moning, but I decided to follow the experts advice and give the legs a break, so I stayed in bed. I could ride my bike if there was more light in the morning.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Thu 6 Miles

Had some problems figuring out how the FR-405 gets started.  It looks like the garmin stops for no reason...  so I try to re-start it...  Maybe I should just leave it alone...  There is this Training 1, Training 2, and Training 3....  Not sure what they are. Time to take a look at the manual.
My knee is felling good, so I feel relieved.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Wed 5 Miles

Temperature went down to about 33F. Still, not bad for this time of year. Ran to Finkbine with the FR-405. Wasn't sure if it was working properly. It seems like you can have a virtual partner, even if you didn't set your distance or time!  That is great. Knee has been recovering.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Tuesday 6 Miles

I was excited to run this morning in this unusual January Iowa weather, 45F! Having days like this should make it a lot easier to train for a Spring marathon!

Monday, January 30, 2012

Week Eight

Week started with the rest day after the Sunday long run. I feel pretty tired from yesterday's 15 M run and hike. Did some weight lifting,  dumbell curls and bench presses; also, did some stretching and abs work. The right knee and now also my left hip hurt last night! I hope one day of rest is enough to recover.

Sunday, January 29, 2012

LSD Sunday 15 M

Is this what they call "recovery run"? Broke my 5K PR yesterday and my body still felt pretty good during the day, just afeeling some sore muscles. I wasn't sure if I should follow the marathon training plan today, long run, 15 miles, but I did. Around mile 10 or 12, my legs felt like they were made of lead, and bones and muscles started aching in weird places. I slowed down a little bit and continued my run.
I enjoyed the beautiful trail and river along the trail. I was thankful to be able to be running in such beautiful area.
Went hiking to the Greenbelt Trail in Cedar Rapids in the afternoon with the whole family. The kids seemed to be full of energy. They ran and hiked up the hills and played in the snow.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Amana Freezer 5K

Race started at 10 AM (10:10 AM) and pickup package at 9 AM. Checked temp 22F, cold!
Set my Garmin to 5K and a 7:30 pace. Race started ten minutes after. I looked at my Garmin after a few minutes and I read some 80 ft!  Was I 80 ft ahead of my virtual partner, or had I ran just 80 ft? That number kept increasing, and I had strange doubts.  I was just happy to see I was ahead of my virtual partner and I was probably running too fast. So, I knew I could slow down a little bit (to do a negative split). Well, as expected, around Mile 2, there was a hill.  I knew I was doing OK with my pace. Going down the hill was slippery, but I took advantage of gravity. In the last mile, there was wind going against the runners. Turned left and a guy wanted to beat me.  We both ran as fast as we could to the finish line.
They posted results right after the race, and I found my name. I could not believe the pace: 6:55 min/mile!  fourth place in my age group.  There are definitely some fast runners in that race. I was able to chat with the top runners.  It's nice to see they are normal guys down to earth. It was a fun race!
Three top runners in each age group were awarded precious medals. I wished I could have gotten one.  I believe I will have a chance if I keep training hard and smart.

Friday, January 27, 2012

Rest Day

It's Friday! I got a good rest this morning. My knees feel great. But, I heard there will be more of that white stuff falling tonight.  It won't be much, so I expect roads will be clean tomorrow.
I learned today about a Chilean writer who lives right here in Iowa City. I wonder why I haven't had the opportunity to meet him? I looked him up and found out he is no longer here in Iowa. He has been named Chilean embassador in Mexico.  I hope I have the chance to meet him some day.

Easy Run 5 Miles

Following the training program.  Set the Garmin for 9:00 min/mile pace.  I was able to run a little bit faster than that! Weather was great (32 F). Now, let's give some rest to those legs until Saturday.
